Brandy, Erykah Badu, Teyana Taylor, and H.E.R. have sufficiently nourished my mind, body, and soul with their sheer talent. On Oct. 27, the group of femcees joined forces to spit a few bars and serve some fierce looks at the BET Hip Hop Awards. During the Ladies First cypher, each artist took turns rapping and rhyming over the tune of Brandy's 1994 hit "I Wanna Be Down."
Taylor was up first, flexing on all her haters and naysayers with ease and cool confidence. H.E.R. took the mic next, praising Black excellence and paying tribute to Breonna Taylor, saying, "Young and respectable / Shady and skeptical / Say a prayer, Breonna Taylor seemed intentional / Black queens with dreams, beautiful, exceptional / Say you wanna be down but still ain't arrest them, though."
Badu then came in with her classic cadence - letting everyone know she's not to be trifled with - followed by Brandy, who closed with an uplifting word for Black women. "Know you beautiful and Black, go be proud / Always trust in God, your higher self, take that vow / And if they say the sky is the limit, then buy a cloud." Whew, the power. Watch the quartet's cypher above!
