"Spread Love Every Day:" Laverne Cox Celebrates Trans Day of Visibility With a Powerful Video

Image Source: Getty / Stefanie Keenan International Trans Day of Visibility is a day dedicated to showing support for the transgender community and celebrating the successes of trans and gender-nonconforming individuals. In honor of the annual awareness day, Laverne Cox shared a gripping yet hopeful message on her Instagram account on Wednesday. "Happy International Day of Trans Visibility," she said. "Visibility is so important. People need to know that we exist and that we've always existed, but we see that with increased visibility of trans folks, we're also targeted more." "There's so much injustice towards trans people, but we have a light." On March 29, Arkansas became the first state to pass a bill banning healthcare for transgender youth seeking access to gender-affirming treatments. This year, Mississippi and Tennessee also passed bills restricting transgender athletes from participating in public school sports on the basis that

Who Killed Sara Isn't a True Story, But Takes Some Inspiration from True Crime Tales

Netflix's murder mystery Who Killed Sara has become the platform's latest surprise smash hit . Its story of a wrongfully convicted man out to avenge his murdered sister feels like it could be at home alongside many of the popular true crime shows on Netflix , but, in fact, Who Killed Sara is a wholly fictional story. The closest tie the show has to real life is actually the name of the twisted family at the story's center . The Lazcanos share a name with Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano, an infamous Mexican drug lord who, as the leader of the powerful Los Zetas drug cartel, was one of the most wanted Mexican drug lords during his time in power. Lazcano was a member of the Mexican Army special forces and received specialized training before deserting, according to CNN Mexico . After being hired as an enforcer for the Gulf Cartel, Lazcano and his allies formed their own paramilitary group, Los Zetas, and became a powerful and brutal organization of their own when they split of

Lil Nas X Has Become the Queer Prophet of Pop, and "Montero" Is Only the Beginning

"In life, we hide the parts of ourselves we don't want the world to see. We lock them away. We banish them. But here, we don't. Welcome to Montero." And from there, chaos. Lil Nas X is an unorthodox kind of celebrity. At this point, he's become a music star and mega-influencer. Two-thousand-nineteen's record-breaking "Old Town Road" paved a way for the original TikTok glory-story, or "the blueprint" as some would say, and for a new way of spreading music. Since then, X has entertained us while peeling back layers of his identity to show that he has big, big plans for the future - and so should we. I believe shame to be one of the tallest monuments one can build for themselves, and there is such a specific type of shame that comes with queerness. Many of us have been taught that if we pursue our desire to be loved, the consequence is not only social and mortal marginalization, but eternal damnation. The next thing I knew, my youth pas

These YA Books Need to Be Made Into Movies - Like, Yesterday

Watching movies based on books is one of my favorite things to do. Did they cast the right actresses, include that one perfect line, and design the set and costumes like I pictured in my head? Some of the best adaptations are based on YA novels, like To All the Boys I've Loved Before and After, and there's always room for more! Many YA books have already announced their upcoming film adaptations - like Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi and The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han - but you can never have too many. Why Yes, I Am Crying Happy Tears From Natalia Bryant's Acceptance Into USC

Natalia Bryant is ready to take that Mamba Mentality to school! On March 30, the eldest daughter of Vanessa and Kobe Bryant documented the exact moment she found out she'd been accepted to the University of Southern California, and it immediately lit up smiles across the internet. "I got in! I got in!" Natalia cheered as Vanessa beamed with pride. "Tears of joy," the proud mama wrote on Instagram. "I'm SO happy for you Nani! I know daddy is so PROUD OF YOU. I am so PROUD OF YOU!! Your hard work and dedication was so worth it. You pushed through the most excruciating pain imaginable and you succeeded. I wish Daddy and Gigi were physically here to celebrate but I know they're here in spirit. We love you so much! #USC #Trojan #FightOn ❤️." I mean, I never thought I'd be shedding actual tears over someone else's college acceptance, but it's impossible not to think about how truly special this moment was for the Bryant family. In antici

Godzilla vs. Kong Is a Battle For the Ages, but Exactly Who Is Victorious?

Image Source: Everett Collection It's been 59 years since Godzilla and Kong last came to blows in 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla , and now they're back and bigger than ever for 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong . Unlike the first film, where Godzilla is viewed as the villain of the story, both Titans are still viewed as "good" from their respective solo films: Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters , specifically. So, exactly why are the pair fighting in the new film and who is ultimately victorious? If you were hoping they were fighting because of a need to protect or destroy mankind, you're thinking too hard. Both Kong and Godzilla view themselves as the Alpha when it comes to the Titans, aka Rodan, Mothra, Behemoth, and more. The pair's rivalry has also been teased in prior films through cave paintings and allusions to an ancient Titan War, with both being the last remaining member of their respective species. "Storywise, the hope is

Well, Cousin Greg Has a Chinstrap Beard and Is "Makin' Shmoney" in the Epic Zola Trailer

When avid internet browsers like myself awakened on what appeared to be a typical gloomy March Wednesday, we had no idea that we were about to be blessed with a gift from the content lords: the Zola movie trailer. The movie, which is based on a famous 2015 Twitter thread , details the 148-tweet saga that then-waitress Zola blew our minds with. It's the story about Zola (played by Taylour Paige ), her new friend Stefani (Riley Keough), and a cross-country road trip that would change their lives forever. In a trailer filled with straight-up chaos, there is one image we cannot shake. A single glimpse of Nicholas Braun, aka our favorite clumsy cousin from Succession , sporting a chinstrap beard and some baggy jeans, will now live rent-free in our brains for the foreseeable future. Yes, Greg the Egg will star in the highly anticipated film as Derrek (also known as "Jarrett" in Zola's tweets), Stefani's boyfriend. We had high expectations for Braun's character,

24 Reasons Eugenio Siller Should Be Your New Celeb Crush, and Yes, They're All Pictures

The moment Eugenio Siller appeared on screen as José María "Chema" Lazcano on Who Killed Sara? , I knew I had found my new celebrity crush. Of course, I'm not alone, as the 39-year-old Mexican actor has been stealing hearts since he first appeared as Luciano Mendoza on Rebelde in 2006. Eugenio has been in everything from telenovelas like Código Postal and ¿Quién Es Quién? to religious film Jesús de Nazaret and romantic comedy Tod@s Caen . When it comes to social media , it's clear that Eugenio loves his fans, his family , and the beach. I am a big fan of his love of the beach as it means more thirst traps, and well, he's really good at them. If you're like me and you've found yourself frequently pausing Who Killed Sara? to find out everything you could about him, then this post is for you. We might not have the answer to who killed Sara , but we do have quite a few excellent Eugenio pictures ahead. Related: Inside the Love Lives of the Who Kill

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are headed down the aisle! The couple got engaged after five years of dating this past October, and it looks like their wedding may be happening sooner than you think. Lizzo Shares a Haunting New Song on TikTok, Confirms She Is Pretty Much a Magical Being

Image Source: Getty / Kevin Mazur Lizzo's back in the recording studio, and she shared a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at a "new song" that has fans crying emoji tears in the comments. "So peaceful," one fan wrote, while another added, "You sound like a siren. I love it." In the 30-second video, the real-life musical sorceress carried a hauntingly beautiful note that might just be proof her voice is magic. The overall consensus seems to be that the enchanting note was reminiscent of the wind spirit's song in "Into the Unknown" from Frozen 2 , and we can definitely pinpoint the exact moment Lizzo's vocals transcend into the otherworldly sphere. Other fans were equally spellbound and quick to ask if the song might be some sort of ethereal collaboration with Harry Styles or Billie Eilish, but Lizzo has yet to comment or give any other details about the new release. Still, in a year when sea shanties and bard music reign supreme, we'

Inbetween Girl Is the Only Kind of Coming-of-Age Film That Makes Sense in 2021

Mei Makino's Inbetween Girl thrives at the crossroads of cultural identity, sexual exploration, and complex relationships - the recipe for a modern coming-of-age film. In her directorial debut, Makino explores life through the lens of high-school senior Angie Chen (played by Emma Galbraith), and to put it bluntly, Angie is going through it. Her parents are getting divorced, she's crushing on a boy who's out of reach, and she's confronted with racial insecurities otherwise left undisturbed. Inbetween Girl stands in contrast to your traditional teen rom-coms, although the director did use many classic films for inspiration. Instead, Angie confronts the messiness of her senior year head on, and in a film that tackles heavy issues, Makino makes room for hope, growth, and humor. There's a comical relatability to Angie's awkwardness, her quick wit, and even her immaturity. Angie's endearing flawed nature makes her easy to root for. To explore her story even mo

It Happened! Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley Finally Let Us See Them Together

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Historic Best Breakfast Cafe (@bestcafeandbar) Since Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley confirmed their engagement in February , the pair has been notoriously private about being seen together. Things seemed to change this week as the couple was not only seen departing Mexico , they were photographed out on a date night at the Best Cafe and Bar in Hot Springs, AK. In the group photo, Aaron and Shailene can be seen cuddling up with their hands interlocked. For a "first photo" together, they certainly picked an adorable pose. While it's unclear when the two started dating, during an appearance on The Tonight Show, Shailene stated that they had met during the pandemic . In the same episode, Shailene also confirmed that despite the news of their engagement breaking in February, the pair had been engaged " for a while ." https://ift.tt/3ugt3SF

It's your last chance to get 'Super Mario 3D All-Stars' (and it's on sale)

SAVE $10.05: Today (March 31) is the last day to get the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection for the Nintendo Switch — it's also $10.05 off at Walmart . Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and for those of us who respond to it, it's been a necessity over the last year that seemed to be overflowing with doom and gloom. Some of us found it in old movies, books, photographs, meals — getting a nice hit of nostalgia isn't restricted to any one thing.  If your nostalgia source tends to be video games, there's one you shouldn't miss: Super Mario 3D All-Stars . And when we say "miss," we mean it — today, March 31, is the last day the game will be on sale. After that, it's gone for good (we don't know why Nintendo is doing this, but it's the grim reality). Also, you can get it for $10.05 off at Walmart . Read more... More about Nintendo , Mashable Shopping , Super Mario 3d All Stars , Entertainment , and Gaming https://ift.tt/3m722Ox

The First Trailer For Zola Is Every Bit as Wild as the 148-Tweet Thread It's Based On

The highly anticipated trailer for A24's Zola is finally here and it was definitely worth the wait. Written by Janicza Bravo and playwright Jeremy O. Harris, and based on an infamous 148-tweet thread , the film follows waitress Zola as she meets a sex worker named Stefani, who convinces Zola to join her on a cross-country road trip to make as much money as possible. Of course, nothing goes to plan and Zola soon finds herself trapped on the wildest trip of her life. The trailer absolutely delivers with all the outlandish moments brought to life by Taylour Paige 's Zola and Riley Keough's Stefani. Surprisingly, the most unexpected moment for me was hearing Nicholas Braun utter "schmoney" as Stefani's boyfriend, Derrek. Rounding out the cast are Colman Domingo as Stefani's pimp, X; Ari'el Stachel as Sean; Jason Mitchell as Dion; Nelcie Souffrant as Gail; and Ts Madison as Hollywood. Trust me when I say you're not ready for this film. If you'd

A 'Zola' trailer is here. It's Twitter's Epic Sex, Drug, and Florida Thread: The Movie.

Remember that time a bit more than five years ago when the internet went wild for a 148-tweet thread from " Zola "? It was then-20-year-old Aziah Wells' firsthand account of her dizzying trip to Florida , starting with a plan hatched by a co-worker to make big money dancing at strip clubs. Now Zola is a movie, and Mashable's Angie Han says it's a damn good one thanks in large part to stars Taylour Paige and Riley Keough. The dark comedy-drama-what-do-you-really call-it premiered at Sundance in early 2020 before the whole world shut down, and now its time has finally come.  This new trailer lays out the roller coaster to come, with Zola set to hit theaters (and theaters alone, seemingly) this summer.
