After the Ratatouille TikTok musical , it was only a matter of time before the minds behind Saturday Night Live turned the Pixar film into their latest joke. On Jan. 30, host John Krasinski poked fun at the familiar Disney character in an NSFW way - instead of pulling the strings in the kitchen, the little rat is pulling the strings in the sheets. I feel personally scarred by this adult switch-up, but I must admit, Pete Davidson makes a pretty spot-on Anton Ego. If the transition from 2020 to 2021 taught us anything, it's that a new calendar year doesn't keep weird things from happening. We have QAnon-sympathizing politicians in DC , soaring GameStop "stonk" values, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers headed to the Super Bowl. Is it any surprise that Kate McKinnon is "slowly losing [her] mind" along with the rest of us? During the Saturday Night Live cold open on Jan. 30, McKinnon asked "What still works?" in a talk show of her own devices. Spoiler: very little makes sense these days. It takes a moment for Passing to reveal itself. At first, the screen is just a white blur, and only gradually do shapes and sound begin to emerge: shoes, voices, a street. Eventually, we're able to place ourselves in 1920s New York, and pinpoint Irene (Tessa Thompson) as our protagonist.  But the disorientation of those first moments never quite fades. Though it's based on a 1929 novella by Nella Larsen, and shot in the elegant black-and-white and boxy 4:3 aspect ratio of classic Hollywood, Passing feels thoroughly modern in its exploration of the blurred lines demarcating race, class, gender, and sexuality. Its old-fashioned aesthetic becomes another a way of pointing out that though things have changed since then, they haven't changed as much as we might want to believe.  Read more... Half a century in, Sesame Street has become one of the most reliable staples of childhood in America. You probably grew up with it; your parents probably did too, and your kids are probably growing up with it now. Which can make it easy to forget how radical the show seemed when it first aired. That, in part, is what Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street is here to fix.  The documentary takes a broad view of the first two decades of the show, digging into the heady days of its creation and introducing the visionaries who made it happen, while also serving up context about the world the show was being born into, and the impact it made on those first generations of viewers. It's a lot for one 107-minute movie to handle, and Street Gang tends to be more interested in offering praise than meaningful insight. Zoom interviews can be full of awkwardness — and that's when your interrupting kids aren't the antichrist Saturday Night Live cast host John Krasinski as a stock market expert and father of two in a Jan. 30 sketch, with Kate McKinnon and Mikey Day as his terrifying twins. At first, the sketch seems to be about how Redditors shook the stock market with GameStop earlier in the week, but then Krasinski moves his chair to reveal a disturbing piece of wall art. He declares proudly that the piece ("Restless Sinner") was made by his daughter. Moments later, McKinnon and Day show up with matching blonde wigs and deadly stares. They keep popping up in Father's interview until they develop certain enmity with his fellow panelist Dale (Beck Bennett), and even their favorite snack won't distract them. Read more... Saturday Night Live tried not go overboard with The Office sketches for host John Krasinski, but the few references that did drop were extremely satisfying. In one sketch, Krasinski joined SNL cast members in singing invented lyrics to TV theme songs, including The Queen's Gambit , Bridgerton , and The Mandalorian . (Dear SNL : Please stop trying to make Baby Yoda a thing.)  Just when it seemed like the sketch would end without doing the obvious, Krasinski takes the mic, singing along to the entire Office theme song. He starts off simple ("Scranton, Scranton, Scranton, Scranton, Scranton, Scranton) and goes on to narrate actions in the split screen ("Tie flip!"). John Krasinski's first-ever opening monologue on Saturday Night Live was haunted by the ghost of The Office . As Krasinski set out to do his whole opening bit, a meta-bit took shape as SNL cast members stationed in the audience peppered him with questions (really, most of them are statements) about his time on the hit NBC series. And that, of course, led to an insistent demand for a Jim... er, that is John and Pam kiss. Even though Jenna Fischer, the actor who played Pam, was nowhere near the SNL set. Enter Pete Davidson. When the young SNL player took to the stage to explain why people are still so obsessed with a show that ended eight years ago — "Everyone's been stuck inside for a year watching The Office non-stop," he explained — he immediately became the ideal choice to fill the role of Pam.
