At a fan event in China earlier this month, Chris Evans practically gave away the final scene of Avengers: Endgame under the guise of a simple hypothetical.
At the Shanghai promotional event, the cast of the Avengers: Infinity War sequel tackled a series of fan questions. The Captain America actor, for instance, was asked what he would do with the Time Stone – and specifically, if Steve Rogers could go back to any MCU movie, which one would he go to and what would he do differently?
“If I had the time stone, I think Steve Rogers would be interested in pursuing a relationship with Peggy Carter,” Evans said. “Honestly, the Time Stone, if he can go anywhere, he’s a man out of time, he’s had to reconcile the fact that he’s not from this place and Peggy Carter really represents a love.”
Sure enough, in the final minutes of Endgame, the First Avenger travels back in time and settles down with Peggy. To be fair, even if this hadn’t been how the new movie had ended, Evans’ answer would’ve been by far the most obvious. So unless the star had come up with an equally convincing suggestion on the spot, perhaps the question gave him no choice but to subtly give the game away.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, even Endgame co-writer Stephen McFeely admitted that the conclusion of Cap’s journey was pretty much giving the fans what they wanted, recalling how he “started to lose [his] barometer on what was just fan service and what was good for the character.”
We’ll leave you to be the judge of that, but either way, it looks like Avengers: Endgame might well have been Evans’ final outing in the MCU. Before dropping out of the saga, however, Steve first passed the Captain America title on to Sam Wilson, and we’ll find out how Anthony Mackie’s character carries the torch when the Falcon and Winter Soldier TV show comes to Disney Plus.
