David Chang made history on Sunday night's episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, becoming the first celebrity contestant to win the top prize in the gameshow's 20 years on the air. Rather than keeping the money for himself, though, he donated every last penny to a very worthy charity.
The chef and restaurateur sailed through the first 13 multiple-choice questions and made it to the final query, which asked what president was the first to have electricity in the White House. The answers included names of past presidents who I, quite frankly, forgot were ever our commander in chief, and Chang wound up utilizing the "Phone a Friend" lifeline to ask sports writer and analyst Mina Kimes for help. After Kimes provided her assistance, host Jimmy Kimmel reminded Chang just how high the stakes were - he could refuse to answer the question and win $500,000, answer it correctly and nab the one million, or answer it incorrectly and only secure $32,000.
"I never imagined I would be in this position, and I always told myself I'm going for the million bucks. I'm gonna let my stupid confidence [and] bravado win out," he said before risking it all and telling Kimmel his final answer: Benjamin Harrison. Kimes's intuition was spot on, because the answer was correct, and a very shocked Chang won the $1 million. He donated the prize to the Southern Smoke Foundation, a nonprofit that's raising funds to help employees of the food and beverage industry who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
