Much like a vengeful spirit that refuses to leave blonde American expats alone, Hollywood just can't resist reviving The Grudge for more and more sequels.
After reimagining Takashi Shimizu's 2002 Japanese supernatural horror film for an American audience in 2004, and then giving that film two more sequels in 2006 and 2009, the story is being dusted off yet again for a 2020 release starring John Cho, Andrea Riseborough, and Betty Gilpin. And now we have a horrifying trailer to give us a taste of what's to come! (Spoiler alert: nightmares. Lots of nightmares.)
Just like in the first few films in the franchise, the R-rated Grudge reboot follows a key piece of lore despite now being set in the US: "When someone dies in the grip of rage, a curse is born." Cho plays Peter, a realtor who goes to check out a new house assigned to his company, only to encounter what seems like a decaying body in a bloody bathtub. He reports the incident to a local detective (Riseborough), and her investigation gets her caught up in the curse as well. "I think something followed me home," she says, before spotting an incredibly disturbing ghost-woman (you know the one) wriggling under her son's bed.
Watch the trailer for the film above (which includes an homage to that shower scene) before The Grudge creeps into theaters on Jan. 3!
