Michelle Obama's Netflix Documentary Takes an Intimate Look at Her Personal Life

Former First Lady Michelle Obama will star in a new Netflix documentary: Becoming, an intimate look at her life before and during her time in the White House. The film will also take a look at Obama's life behind the scenes during her 34-city book tour for her memoir of the same name, shedding light on the the power of community and "the spirit of connection" that comes with sharing personal stories and experiences.

"What I noticed most was how she listens and interacts with people and how they react to her," said director Nadia Hallgren. "There's a magic that happens when people meet her - an afterglow and a boost in confidence. I wanted to translate this experience to the screen." The documentary, which takes a close-up look at Obama's life before she became the First Lady, also calls attention to some of the greatest lessons she's learned over the years that have motivated her to become the person she is today.

"In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries, and dreams," Obama said in a press release, referring to the communities she spoke with during her book tour. "We processed the past and imagined a better future. In talking about the idea of 'becoming,' many of us dared to say our hopes out loud . . . Even in hard times, maybe especially in hard times, our stories help cement our values and strengthen our connections. Sharing them shows us the way forward." Becoming will be available on Netflix on May 6.
