Now That Wonder Woman 3 Is Confirmed, the Mid-Credits Scene in WW84 Is Even More Exciting

Wonder Woman 1984 officially debuted on Dec. 25, and we have our eyes on a new prominent character. While Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) is still our favorite superpowered princess goddess, the film introduces viewers to another powerful being who might be even more legendary: the Amazon warrior Asteria. WW84 makes a few references to the luminary, finally revealing her valiant backstory when Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) asks about Asteria's golden armor that Diana keeps hidden away.

Diana explains that, in ancient times, the Amazons were enslaved by men before her mother, Hippolyta, freed them. But they weren't able to fully escape until Asteria battled their adversaries alone, seemingly sacrificing herself. Her protective gear, which included a pair of wings reminiscent of an eagle's, was made from the armor of all the other Amazons, and, according to Diana, it was "strong enough to take on the whole world." While Asteria diverted the men's militancy - taking hit after hit in the process - the Amazons escaped to Themyscira. Diana reveals that she looked for Asteria when she left her native realm but only found the warrior's armor.

As the film's one and only mid-credits scene confirms, there's a reason Diana never found proof of Asteria's fatal sacrifice: the famed combatant survived the battle. During the brief sequence, a woman wearing a blue cape-like garment effortlessly stops a falling pole from harming another woman and her baby. The mysterious stranger with super-strength then reveals herself as Asteria. Even more amazing, the actress portraying her is none other than Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman in the 1970s TV series.

It's unclear if the scene is simply a nod to the OG live-action Wonder Woman or if this is teasing a future storyline. Now that a third Wonder Woman film is confirmed, we have to hope for the latter. I mean, how epic would it be seeing Gadot and Carter share the big screen as Amazon heroes?
