Did You Catch Daniel Kaluuya Quoting Nipsey Hussle in His Acceptance Speech? It Was a Flex

Daniel Kaluuya refused to let some technological difficulties take away from his winning moment. At the 2021 Golden Globes, the Judas and the Black Messiah actor accepted the award for best supporting actor, and as the first award of the evening, it was a stomach-turning moment when his mic was muted. Kaluuya quipped, "You did me dirty!," before checking that the sound was back on, and he immediately delivered a powerful speech about his role in the film and the importance of Black storytelling.

"This took it out of me; I gave it everything," Kaluuya said. "Like the great Nipsey Hussle says, 'We're here to give till we're empty,' and I gave everything. I couldn't give it to a more noble man, and that's Chairman Fred Hampton. I hope generations after this can see how brilliantly he thought, how brilliantly he spoke, and how brilliantly he loved. He taught me about myself and made me grow as a man, and I appreciate it with all my heart. There's a lot of information about how he died, but I hope people out there will go and learn about how incredibly he lived."

In Judas and the Black Messiah, Kaluuya starred as Fred Hampton, the chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party who was killed during a police raid in 1969. His speech and his quote from the late, great Hussle spoke volumes about the importance of sharing Hampton's story. Kaluuya truly gave it "everything." Watch his full speech above.
