Oh, you thought E.T. had a happy ending?
Well you're clearly remembering it wrong. Appearing on The Tonight Show on Monday, John Oliver finishes an anecdote about meeting Drew Barrymore (who was, of course, in E.T.) by sharing a story about how much the film's ending destroyed him when he was a child.
The reason? Elliott staying back on Earth rather than going with E.T. in the spaceship.
"What's he staying for? His family?" demands an outraged Oliver in the clip above. "An alien you just made a key connection with is leaving, invites you to come, and you stay? Even at that age I understood that the fundamental law of rom-coms — if you can call E.T. that, which I'm not sure you can — is you get on the plane at the end."
He makes a very convincing case.
