'Brahmāstra' is Bollywood's answer to the Avengers

A man stands in a ring of fire.

After ten years in the making, Bollywood's blend of ancient mythology and Avengers-like storytelling has emerged. The trailer for Ayan Mukerji's Brahmāstra, which already has over a million views on YouTube, is here.

Set in contemporary India, the film examines a secret society of people who guard "Astras" (or divine weapons); the most powerful of these weapons is Brahmāstra, possessing a strength that threatens to destroy the universe. The protagonist Shiva (played by Ranbir Kapoor) discovers that he holds a connection to this power and to the element of fire.

The movie, set to be the first in a trilogy, also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Nagarjuna Akkineni and Mouni Roy.

The ambitious project is the combination of a complex narrative, several years of work, and the idea of blending traditional Bollywood with genres spanning across sci-fi, adventure, and action.
