Emma Thompson IS The Trunch.
The screen adaptation of Tim Minchin's beloved musical version of Roald Dahl's Matilda is coming to Netflix.
The film stars none other than Thompson as the shotput-throwing, children-hating principal of our Chokey-fuelled nightmares, Miss Trunchbull, and Lashana Lynch as everyone's ultimate teacher of our cottagecore dreams, Miss Honey.
Alisha Weir stars as the titular hero, with Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough playing her awful parents, the Wormwoods. Plus, comedian Sindhu Vee stars as Mrs. Phelps, the librarian, Rei Yamauchi Fulker plays Matilda's bestie Lavender, Charlie Hodson-Prior takes on Bruce Bogtrotter, Meesha Garbett as Hortensia, and Winter Jarrett Glasspool as Amanda Thripp.
It's not clear yet how they're going to bring songs like the swing-favourite "When I Grow Up," or the jaw-dropping "School Song" to the screen. But considering how good screen musicals like In the Heights and West Side Story have been of late, here's hoping writer Dennis Kelly and director Matthew Warchus have something sensational up their sleeves.
Matilda the Musical will come to Netflix in the US this holiday season.
