The horrifying trailer for Ti West's "Pearl" is here. The film is a prequel to West's "X," and follows that movie's villain, Pearl, as a young woman growing up on a farm and searching for fame. In "X," Mia Goth played the elderly Pearl using prosthetics, and she reprises her role as the younger version of the character here. Ahead, watch the trailer for the new horror flick.
Back in March, West revealed the existence of "Pearl" at SXSW. "Pearl" was filming in a secret location in New Zealand and was already in post-production when "X" was released. Here's how A24 describes "Pearl:" "Filmmaker Ti West returns with another chapter from the twisted world of 'X,' in this astonishing follow-up to the year's most acclaimed horror film. Trapped on her family's isolated farm, Pearl must tend to her ailing father under the bitter and overbearing watch of her devout mother. Lusting for a glamorous life like she's seen in the movies. Pearl's ambitions, temptations, and repressions all collide, in the stunning, technicolor-inspired origin story of 'X''s iconic villain."
The movie is clearly thematically tied to "X" as well. In "X," Goth also played Maxine, a young woman who's intent on becoming famous through any means necessary. She and her friends cross paths with Pearl and her farm when they want to use it as the setting for their XXX film, but things go horribly awry.
West, when talking to the Los Angeles Times back in March, compared the new film to a "demented" Disney movie. He also hinted that a third movie might join the series, saying, "I always felt like if you're going to make a slasher movie, you have to make a bunch of sequels."
Here's everything we know so far about "Pearl," including the cast and release date.
