Avatar: The Last Airbender: 10 Best Moments Of Friendship In The Series

The show Avatar: The Last Airbender might be a fantasy epic story with an extraordinary hero and terrifying main villain, but it’s so well-loved largely in part to the characters and their interactions. The main cast of characters are all very unique and compelling, and the bonds of friendship that Team Avatar had were very endearing.

The series is great because it explores all different kinds of relationships and types of love, but it especially focuses on friendships and how important these connections are.

10 Zuko and Aang embracing after Zuko’s coronation

Given that Zuko spent most of the series trying to find and capture Aang, seeing these two become close friends who trust one another is really rewarding. In the last episode after Zuko is crowned Firelord, the two embrace and talk about how they will work together to make a better world.

Given that they do end up changing the world so much through adulthood, this also foreshadows what’s to come in Legend of Korra.

9 When the Fire Nation teens burned down a party together

While most of the best friendship moments on the series are between different members of the Gaang, there are times when some of the other characters have friendship interactions, too.

After the party on Ember Island goes awry and Azula, Zuko, Mai, and Ty Lee have an emotional time on the beach, they end up bonding in their weird, special way by burning down a house. While it’s not a great thing to do, there's something sort of endearing about it.

8 All of the times the Gaang protected one another

It’s hard to pick out just one of these moments because there are so many good ones. Over the three seasons, all of these characters look out for and save one another many times.

Katara, Sokka, and Toph are all there to help Aang in his mission of defeating Firelord Ozai, and they all deeply care about one another a lot.

7 Sokka and Katara leaving with Aang in the first season

When Katara and Sokka find Aang in the ice, it’s rather surprising, and it changes everything for them. Katara quickly bonds with Aang and wants to help him, and Sokka is willing to go with Aang as well.

While they don’t know Aang all that well yet, the fact that they are willing to support him and try to help him save the world is the foundation of their friendship. Plus, it also shows that Katara and Sokka are good people.

6 When Katara comforts Aang over the loss of Appa

Katara and Aang might end up having a romantic relationship, but in the first while of knowing each other, they are friends. Whether their feelings come from a romantic place or not, their friendship is foundational, and their love for each other is very real.

One of the best moments when Katara takes care of Aang is when she comforts him after he’s despairing over Appa being kidnapped.

5 When Ty Lee betrayed Azula to help Mai

This is another great moment of friendship that happens outside of Team Avatar, and it’s when Ty Lee sides with Mai at the end of the Boiling Rock episode.

After Mai defies Azula in order to save Zuko, Ty Lee stands by Mai and protects her from Azula. Given how poorly Azula has always treated them and that she cares about Mai, this was an important moment for Ty Lee’s character.

4 The many bonding adventures with Zuko

There are so many wonderful friendship moments that occur in season three when Zuko joins up with Aang and the rest. It’s hard to pick just one moment because Sokka, Katara, and Aang all get a chance to bond with Zuko.

Whether it’s Sokka telling Zuko about Princess Yue or Katara forgiving Zuko and giving him a hug, these episodes allowed the Gaang to become closer friends with Zuko.

3 When Katara helped Toph pull a scam

Katara and Toph definitely don’t always get along, but this is a realistic element of many friendships. They have very different personalities that often clash, and this is the most evident in the episode when Toph begins pulling scams for money.

While Katara is very disapproving at first, she ends up helping Toph pull off one big, final scam and it brings these two closer together.

2 When the team was reunited with Appa

Aappa might be an animal instead of a human, but the bonds that the team, especially Aang, have with Appa are very strong.

Appa is a wonderful pet and friend. After Appa being lost for so long, the moment when they all get reunited with their beloved furry friend is super emotional. Seeing Aang finally get App back after he’d been upset for so long was especially heartwarming.

1 Friendships Last Forever

The overall best and most memorable friendship moment happens in season three between Aang, Ktara, Sokka, and Toph.

After Aang learns that Avatar Roku had also been friends with Monk Gyatso, the group reflects on their own friendship as Toph asks, "Do you really believe friendships can last more than one lifetime?" The four of them hold hands, and it’s an overall beautiful moment that speaks to how important these relationships are to the series.
