Amy Adams joins the cast of the upcoming film adaptation of Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen. The musical premiered on Broadway in 2016 and became a massive hit, garnering six Tonys, including Best Musical. Now the story is being retold for the big screen. Stephen Chbosky, writer of popular coming-of-age novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower and director of 2017's Wonder, will direct the upcoming musical. The film's music and lyrics are by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the Academy Award-winning duo behind La La Land and The Greatest Showman.
According to Deadline, Adams has been cast as Cynthia Murphy in the upcoming film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen. Adams is joined by Ben Platt, who originated the role of Evan Hansen on Broadway, Booksmart's Kaitlyn Dever, The Hate U Give's Amandla Stenberg, and Atypical's Nic Dodani. Additionally, another Dear Evan Hansen alum, Colton Ryan, has joined the ensemble cast.
Dear Evan Hansen is not Adams' first time in a musical-movie. She previously showed her vocal chops when she starred in the Disney musical films Enchanted and The Muppets. The six-time Academy Award-nominated actress will also star in the upcoming Netflix drama Hillbilly Elegy and the thriller film The Woman in the Window.
Dear Evan Hansen follows the story of Evan Hansen, a teenager struggling with social anxiety who gets caught up in a lie when Evan's classmate Connor Murphy (Ryan) commits suicide, and his family mistakes one of Evan's letters for Connor's suicide note. Attempting to comfort Connor's family and find human connection for the first time, Evan must pretend that he was Connor's best friend. Production on the film does not yet have a start date, but Adams' addition to the cast likely now has fans even more eager for its release.
