Newly released Captain Marvel concept art shows the titular hero fighting Yon-Rogg in space. 2019's Captain Marvel featured the MCU debut of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and the film was a billion-dollar box-office hit. It was also the MCU's first female-led film. Carol then returned as Captain Marvel in Avengers: Endgame. However, Captain Marvel was truly Carol's origin story, and a major part of her character arc explored her relationship with her mentor, the elite Starforce Kree commander Yon-Rogg (Jude Law).
Yon-Rogg's decision to do everything in his power to keep Carol from regaining her memories and realizing her full power ultimately worked against him. After all, it was Yon-Rogg who discovered Carol when she absorbed the power of the space Infinity Stone, and who also gave her a transfusion of his blood to trick her into thinking she was Kree after losing her memories as a human. It could be argued that Yon-Rogg was the true villain of Captain Marvel. Or was he just an extremely devout member of the Kree race, looking out for their best interest? Ironically, Carol's climactic fight with Yon-Rogg in space over control of the Tessaract ultimately helped her own best interests. She was finally able to break free of Yon-Rogg's and the Supreme Intelligence's control by accepting her true self and releasing her incredible power.
Artist Andy Park, AKA andyparkart on Instagram, revealed a piece of concept art he painted for Captain Marvel featuring the Carol vs. Yon-Rogg space fight. The piece features a fully realized Carol as Captain Marvel, ready to punch Yon-Rogg. Check out the full piece of concept art and the artist's interesting explanation on the purpose of concept art keyframes for movie productions below.
Although Yon-Rogg didn't have the most honorable of intentions in training Carol to be an elite Kree fighter, he did ultimately help her become Captain Marvel in the long run. The moment when he asks Carol to prove to him that she can strike him down without her powers when their space battle had descended to Earth was an essential character-defining moment for both of them. The only thing better than Carol photon-blasting him as a response was her telling Yon-Rogg, "I have nothing to prove to you." While it has yet to be confirmed if Yon-Rogg will return for the highly anticipated Captain Marvel 2 in 2022, it would be very interesting to witness a rematch between Carol and her former mentor.
Although plot details about the sequel are scarce, Captain Marvel did end with Carol sending Yon-Rogg back to the Kree planet Hala to warn the Supreme Intelligence that she would end the war between the Kree and the Skrulls. It would be surprising if Yon-Rogg didn't return for the sequel in some way, shape, or form. Regardless of what the future holds for Carol Danvers, Yon-Rogg's role in her development was a crucial step for Captain Marvel to ascend to the all-powerful Avenger she is today.
