C0-showrunner Ildy Modrovich has revealed that the hitch in Michael's shoulder will be explained in Lucifer season 5, part 2. After premiering on Fox in 2016, Lucifer became a hit for the network, running for three seasons before it was canceled. Fortunately, Netflix stepped in and revived the beloved series, airing season 4 on the streaming platform. After renewing the series for a fifth and final season, the streaming service changed their mind and renewed Lucifer for season 6, which will be its last. Lucifer season 5 will be split into two 8-episode installments, the first of which just premiered on the streaming platform.
Lucifer follows Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), who decides to vacate his position as the ruler of Hell to spend some time on Earth in order to better understand humanity. After settling in Los Angeles, he crosses paths with a Detective named Chloe Decker (Lauren German), with whom he forms a bond as they solve murders together. The series stars Ellis, German, Kevin Alejandro, D.B. Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Rachael Harris, Scarlett Estevez, and Aimee Garcia. Lucifer season 5, part 1, included the notable new addition of Michael, Lucifer's twin brother, also played by Ellis. One of the physical aspects of the character fans have noticed is a hitch in the character's right shoulder. Naturally, fans have wondered how Michael's right arm got injured.
In an interview with TVLine, co-showrunner Ildy Modrovich discussed Michael's right arm injury in season 5, part 1. When asked if fans will find out why the character has a hitch in his arm, Modrovich responded, "We find out why he has it in [Season] 5B." He goes on to say, "We explore it pretty in depth." In Lucifer season 5, part 1, Michael assumes Lucifer's identity while he is running Hell once more in order to meddle with his personal relationships, particularly with Chloe.
Lucifer season 5, part 1, ended with a cliffhanger ending involving Lucifer and Michael, introducing a pivotal new character and setting the stage for the second half of the season. While there were fans who felt the twist involving the arrival of Michael was spoiled in the trailer for the new season, co-showrunner Joe Henderson explained why the reveal wasn't as big of a spoiler as it seemed. Michael isn't the first of Lucifer's kin to make an appearance on the series. Woodside's Amenadiel has remained a series regular throughout its run, and Michael Imperioli made an appearance as another one of Lucifer's brothers, Uriel, in season 2.
While Lucifer season 5, part 1, was an unfortunately lackluster return for the highly entertaining series, one of the best aspects of the new season was the debut of Michael, a Biblical figure that has a rich backstory. Not only was Ellis able to fully differentiate and define the character effortlessly, but the character made for a formidable foe throughout the season's first batch of episodes. While Michael's arm injury could easily remain shrouded in mystique, it's comforting to know the showrunners plan on delving into it in order to flesh out the character and his tumultuous relationship with Lucifer. Though fans will have to wait a little bit longer for answers, all will be revealed about Michael's arm and history when Lucifer season 5, part 2, hits Netflix in 2021.
