How Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash Made The Worst Movie Canon

When Freddy vs Jason vs Ash was released, the comic series continued the idea of these separate horror franchises taking place within the same universe by adding Ash Williams from the Evil Dead universe into the conflict. With the sequel Freddy vs Jason vs Ash: Nightmare Warriors (2009), the returning team of Jeff Katz, James Kuhoric and Jason Craig took that one step further by bringing together the final survivors from both the Friday the 13th and the Nightmare on Elm Street films to take care of Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, once and for all. With the lovable but preferably loner Ash Williams thrown back in the mix, the formation of this unlikely team would interestingly enough make one of Nightmare on Elm Street's least favorite films Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare canon.

In the 1991 film by director Rachel Talalay with a story and script by her and writer Michael De Luca, Freddy Krueger has returned targeting the last group of teenagers from Springwood, Ohio who are under the supervision of Doctor Maggie Burroughs. By returning to Springwood, it is revealed at the cost of many lives that Freddy had a family that included a daughter. Going on a hunch, Maggie discovers via her adoption papers that her real name is Katherine Krueger, her name changed when she was adopted after her father's infamous failed incarceration and murder. After learning the true reason for Freddy's powers and constant reincarnation, Maggie goes into the dreaming world where she is able to enter Freddy's mind and learns about how his history and abuse lead to his murderous lifestyle, his victims including Maggie's birth mother. Upon pulling him into the real world, Maggie and her father engage in a battle that ends with Maggie stabbing her malicious father with his signature clawed glove and leaving him to die with a pipe bomb in his chest. With Freddy's ridiculous dream demons leaving him powerless, it would appear that Freddy was indeed, finally dead.

In the Freddy vs Jason vs Ash sequel taking place six months later, Ash Williams is approached by Dr. Maggie Burroughs who is working alongside Dr. Neil Gordon, one of the few survivors from Dream Warriorsabout putting together a special team of final survivors with the goal of stopping Ash's old foes. Dismissing this horror movie Avengers membership, Jason's re-appearance and murder of Ash's girlfriend has Ash reconsider Maggie's offer as he is present among the others who followed up on Maggie's request.

But after Freddy is brought back from the Deadite world by the Necronomicon and Jason's attack on the team is thwarted by Tommy Jarvis' intervention, Maggie insists on the team to make themselves known claiming the leader of Project Black Book, Director Gordon Russell, is her father. Upon seeing Director Russell and the returned Freddy fight, Maggie grabbed her father's signature clawed glove and surprisingly gutted the foolish Director in front of Neil and fellow survivor Rennie Wickham. In a surprise twist (and an uncomfortable display of affection), Maggie is revealed to be in league with her father, even acknowledging herself as Kathryn Krueger. Armed with a new outfit which included dual clawed gloves, she completes her betrayal by killing both Neil and Rennie, the death and deception relayed to the others by the psychic/telekinetic Tina Shepherd. Later in the series, Kathryn fought with Jason when he attempted to attack Freddy again where upon her defeat,  her father revealed he planned to kill her eventually. Fortunately for him, Kathryn met her end when a tank carrying Ash Williams crashed through the demonically possessed Oval Office, squishing her upon impact.

Maggie's behavior and betrayal of the group in favor of her father didn't appear to be canon with her portrayal in Freddy's Dead although the creators were more likely focused on her relation to Freddy as an explanation for her turn to evil. In this massive crossover that saw Freddy and Jason defeated (again), the few remaining survivors calling themselves the Nightmare Warriors would heal and prepare for the likelihood of either monster's return while Ash Williams drove off into the sunset. Although Maggie's death was one of many in the series, it was surprising and a bit disappointing to see a Freddy's Dead's survivor who worked so hard to defeat the evil from her past end up succumbing to it in Nightmare Warriors. There won't always be a tank to drop on someone when that kind of thing happens.
