Netflix's Enola Holmes is a movie based on the young adult book series written by Nancy Springer. It is the story of the teenage sister of Sherlock Holmes who sets out to find her mother after she disappears on her sixteenth birthday. The characters in this movie are written in a way that is typical of other movies meant for young adults.
The kids make their way through the world and are independent and manage to pull off things that the adults can't. It's fun, entertaining, and light-hearted. Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes are characters well known to audiences, but Enola Holmes changes things up and brings a very fresh and new perspective to the Holmes clan.
10 Miss Harrison
Fiona Shaw plays Miss Harrison who runs Miss Harrison's Finishing School. A friend of Mycroft, there seems to be some underlying tension between these characters which is later manipulated by Enola and Tewkesbury to secure her escape from the boarding school.
Miss Harrison is a very harsh and strict lady who slaps Enola because of what Enola says. Miss Harrison's idea of how girls and women should present themselves in society in no way connects to what Enola wants. And it becomes apparent that they will definitely not be getting along.
9 Linthorn
The man in the bowler hat, Linthorn was apparently hired by "England" to kill off Tewkesbury in order to ensure that he doesn't participate in the monumental vote. It is Linthorn who tries to throw Tewkesbury off the train, and it is then that Enola decides to help Tewkesbury.
Linthorn then pursues her as well, because of her connection with Tewkesbury. Linthorn is a professional assassin by the looks of it, but Enola and Tewkesbury manage to outsmart him.
8 The Dowager
Tewkesbury's grandmother believes that she and her family were given the duty to look after parts of England (that they owned) to preserve the beauty and culture of England. Even presented in this manner, it is not subtle enough to cover up the fact that the Dowager would give anything to preserve her way of life.
She doesn't welcome the changes that Tewkesbury and his father before him wanted to bring to England, and she is determined enough to kill her son and grandson for what she thinks is right.
7 Lestrade
Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard is Sherlock's close personal friend. The exchange between Enola, who pretends to be Sherlock's assistant, and Lestrade, is amusing on many counts.
It is Lestrade who rightly identified Enola as Sherlock's and Mycroft's sister and it is Lestrade who finally manages to catch them. In the end, Lestrade is the one who asks Sherlock how his sister solves the case before him as well.
6 Edith
The jujutsu trainer and owner of the tea shop where women read and discussed "seditious" matters like feminism and social movements, Edith is the one who points out to Enola that maybe Eudoria doesn't want to be found.
She tells Enola very rightly that she should be living to figure herself out and not to figure out where her mother is. Edith is also a part of the larger secret movement that Eudoria is a part of.
5 Mycroft
Played by Sam Claflin of The Hunger Games fame, Mycroft in this iteration is a cruel, patriarchial, and insensitive man. He finds only faults in Enola and Eudoria and is unable to even sympathize with her for a second.
It is Mycroft who wants to put Enola into finishing school to make her "a proper lady." Claflin plays Mycroft with the tinge of evil and chauvinism required making him a thoroughly believable privileged man who refuses to consider the lives of anyone outside of his own.
4 Sherlock Holmes
Henry Cavill plays the world-famous Sherlock Holmes in this iteration. The character has been played by many incredible actors like Robert Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch, and so on. But Cavill plays it differently. He isn't mean-spirited, snarky; he basically isn't a sociopath.
He is kind, concerned, and a lot more empathetic than any version of Sherlock Holmes that has been seen on screen before this. Sherlock identifies Enola's genius and spirit and is willing to guide her and help her. And he is quietly proud of the fact that his sister solved the case before him.
3 Eudoria Holmes
The legendary Helena Bonham Carter plays the mother of the Holmes children. But audiences only see her in relation to her daughter Enola. Eudoria brought Enola up with immense love. She taught her everything she could possibly need to thrive in the world. They enjoyed each other's company a lot.
Eudoria presented a version of a mother who seemed "wild" to outsiders, but genuinely just wanted her daughter to not be restricted by the inane norms and rules of society.
2 Lord Tewkesbury
Louis Patridge plays the adorably innocent and naive Lord Tewkesbury. He runs away from home and would have been killed almost immediately if not for Enola. But he does Enola a solid and saves her from the finishing school as well.
They are a good team because Tewkesbury is more patient and slow than the more energetic Enola and thus they bring out the best in each other. Tewkesbury just likes being with nature, growing flowers, and spending time in this manner. He is a very nice person at heart.
1 Enola Holmes
Millie Bobby Brown is the right fit for the character of Enola Holmes. She is spunky, intelligent, insanely clever. But she's also kind, helpful, and empathetic. This makes her a detective who is as concerned about her friend's life, as she is about solving the crime.
Enola is fiercely independent and capable of whatever life puts in front of her. She refuses to live by society's rules and makes her own way in the world.
