A new animated music video celebrates 24 years of Pokémon, containing references and guest cameos from across the franchise’s many games and anime adaptations. The 25th anniversary of Nintendo’s beloved monster-raising RPG series is coming next year, prompting fans the world over to celebrate as speculations rise about what kind of new game announcements the milestone will bring.
Some of these rumored Pokémon 25th anniversary reveals include updated remakes of the Nintendo DS-era Pokémon Diamond And Pearl, a possible Johto-themed sequel to the Pokémon: Let’s Go games for the Nintendo Switch, and maybe even remastered editions of mainline Pokémon titles from the past seven generations. More forthcoming (and concrete) announcements include several Shiny Pokémon events for the mobile Pokémon Go and a brand-new DLC expansion for last year’s Pokemon: Sword And Shield - the latter of which has led to a very heartfelt and nostalgic tribute to the entire franchise.
During yesterday’s Pokémon Sword And Shield Expansion Pass presentation, a beautiful animated music video titled “GOTCHA!” was shown, featuring a group of teens and their Pokémon partners traveling the world to the sound of Japanese alt-rock group Bump of Chicken. As the kids journey on in the grand tradition of the franchise, characters from various Pokémon games, shows, and movies appear briefly. These include the classic Generation 1 antagonist Mewtwo, Pokémon: Black And White villain N, the wise Professor Oak from the Pokémon anime, and the original game protagonist Red, just to name a few. Even the choice of partner Pokémon for the two main kids, a Pikachu and an Eevee, double as a shout-out to both the anime (where the two creatures were the main Pokémon of rivals Ash Ketchem and Gary Oak, respectively) and the Pokémon: Let’s Go Pickachu/Eevee! titles. Despite complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Pokémon franchise has enjoyed one of its most financially successful years in 2020, thanks to the continuing popularity of Pokémon Go and last year’s Pokémon Sword And Shield. Additionally, the free-to-play Pokémon Café Mix recently launched its first-ever multiplayer event, featuring the iconic Gen 1 heavyweight Snorlax.
In the meantime, the “GOTCHA!” music video is a beautiful and loving homage to the Pokémon franchise and all of its various iterations over the years, complemented by vivid animation and Bump of Chicken's uplifting music. It's a visually stunning way for fans to bring back some treasured memories of their own first steps into the vast and colorful world of Pokémon as they wait for the 25th anniversary next year.
