James Gunn: Why We're Excited About The Suicide Squad (& More Excited About Guardians 3)

When some old offensive tweets resurfaced and James Gunn was fired as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the situation ended up working out in his favor. He scored a gig working for Marvel’s closest rival, DC, helming the studio’s quasi-sequel/reboot to Suicide Squad, entitled The Suicide Squad, and he ended up getting rehired to make the Guardians threequel after all.

Both of Gunn’s upcoming comic book movies are exciting. The final chapter in his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is arguably the more exciting of the two, but there are also plenty of reasons to look forward to The Suicide Squad.

10 Excited About The Suicide Squad: James Gunn Can Fix The Franchise

The members of the Suicide Squad rank among the most fun, interesting, and badass characters in the DC Comics universe. Unfortunately, the rushed schedule that Warner Bros. enforced on David Ayer for the first movie, paired with the editors the studio hired to recut the movie as a feature-length trailer, meant that it failed miserably.

Studio executives have learned from their mistakes and given James Gunn enough time and creative control to make The Suicide Squad as a great movie.

9 More Excited About Guardians 3: The Previous Two Movies Have Built Up To It

While The Suicide Squad will be mostly ignoring the previous movie and acting as a redo for the little supervillain franchise that could, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the direct result of two movies’ worth of narrative progression and character development.

The closest comparison to The Suicide Squad is something like The Incredible Hulk or The Amazing Spider-Man, but Guardians Vol. 3 is the Endgame or Logan or The Dark Knight Rises of the Guardians trilogy.

8 Excited About The Suicide Squad: It’s A Hard R-Rated Movie

Joel Kinnaman has said that, in addition to being really funny, the script for The Suicide Squad is “heavily R-rated.” This will make it Gunn’s first R-rated movie since Super, his comic book satire starring Rainn Wilson as a wrench-wielding vigilante.

The R ratings of Joker and Birds of Prey proved that adult-oriented content can do wonders in the DC universe, and Gunn is just twisted enough to fully utilize the freedom of the R rating.

7 More Excited About Guardians 3: The Search For Gamora Is An Intriguing Setup

The Guardians’ final scene in Avengers: Endgame saw Quill trying to find Gamora’s location. The present-day Gamora who fell in love with Quill is definitively dead following her sacrifice by Thanos in Infinity War, but the pre-character development 2014 version is out there somewhere, having left the battlefield following Tony Stark’s death.

The search for Gamora is an intriguing jumping-off point for Guardians Vol. 3, shaking up the team dynamic and giving them a common goal.

6 Excited About The Suicide Squad: The Ensemble Cast Is Incredible

In addition to some terrific actors returning from the first Suicide Squad movie, from Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, James Gunn has added some exciting fresh faces to the ensemble.

These include Idris Elba, John Cena, Peter Capaldi, Alice Braga, Nathan Fillion, and even a couple of cohorts he’s poached from his time at Marvel, like Michael Rooker and Taika Waititi.

5 More Excited About Guardians 3: The Team Is Now A Part Of The Larger MCU

Since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the titular team has been featured prominently in the third and fourth Avengers movies. Thor joined the Guardians at the end of Endgame; Rocket and Nebula forged strong friendships with some of the Avengers; and Earth now has the Guardians’ number.

This sets up a threequel that will be more deeply embedded in the larger Marvel universe than the previous two, allowing for some tantalizing cameos and team-ups.

4 Excited About The Suicide Squad: It’s Fulfilling The Promise Of “The Dirty Dozen With Supervillains”

The first Suicide Squad movie promised to be The Dirty Dozen with supervillains, but studio meddling sort of derailed that plan and turned it into a generic blockbuster.

With James Gunn at the helm, The Suicide Squad should be able to live up to that promise. It’s reportedly inspired by ‘70s war movies. The Dirty Dozen technically came out in the late ‘60s, but the ‘70s brought a slew of pulpy, action-packed war movies inspired by The Dirty Dozen, like Enzo G. Castellari’s The Inglorious Bastards.

3 More Excited About Guardians 3: Adam Warlock Is Coming

Although James Gunn has suggested that Adam Warlock might not make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it would be pretty disappointing if he didn’t follow up on his teaser from the end credits of Vol. 2.

At the end of the last Guardians movie, Ayesha created an artificial being capable of destroying the team and named it “Adam,” teasing the introduction of Adam Warlock into the MCU fold.

2 Excited About The Suicide Squad: Gunn Chose Suicide Squad Out Of Almost All The DC Properties

When Disney fired James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, DC was eager to hire him for one of their own movies. They pretty much offered him his pick of the DC properties, including Superman.

Out of all the DC properties offered to him, Gunn specifically chose to do a Suicide Squad movie. He could’ve directed any DC movie and he chose this one. That’s a promising sign.

1 More Excited About Guardians 3: It’ll Complete Rocket’s Character Arc

When he was reinstated as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn said that the thing he was most excited about was finishing Rocket’s MCU character arc.

Rocket is the character that Gunn has always identified with the most and he must have something really spectacular planned for the conclusion to his story.
